So 50-over cricket is dying, and only muscle-bound, switch-hitting and reverse-sweeping batsmen can survive in the modern one-day jungle. Pah! Sachin Tendulkar certainly blew those couple of absurd and trendy notions asunder last week with his record-breaking one-day international double century against South Africa.

Its greatest glory was that it was an innings with which any era could identify; one of stunning convention and wonderful simplicity, full of straight-blade shots from a bat that somehow appears broader than any other.

There were cover-drives aplenty, all directly from the text book, which was not bad for a man who was so concerned about the stroke that he recently made a Test century with barely a single drive.

The area behind the bowler was explored relentlessly and the leg-side boundary found regularly with a late flick of the wrists. This truly was a victory for placement over power.

I hope the myopic county chairmen who voted against 50-over cricket were watching. This is a form of the game that must prevail. And if properly marketed and scheduled (is it any wonder that county 40-over matches are more popular when played in high summer rather than the Arctic April afforded 50 overs?), it can do.

The Australians may be bored of it, but they've just played 10 matches in a month.

The delirious thousands in Gwalior offered a very different tale: Tendulkar's innings will live always in the memory.

No Twenty20 or 40-over innings will ever be able to lay claim to that.

Sachin Tendulkar has become the first cricketer to make a double-hundred in the 39 years of one-day international cricket.

The blazing innings comes 10 months after his 36th birthday and four years after he was booed off his home ground in Mumbai, with his career apparently in terminal decline. Somewhat improbably given today's innings, the abuse had been for slow scoring.

Tendulkar ended India's second one-day game against South Africa unbeaten on exactly 200, after 147 balls of beautiful destruction. He relied on finesse as much as force, hitting only three sixes to go with 25 fours.

India reached 401 for three in 50 overs under Gwalior's floodlights, against one of the strongest attacks in the world.

In reply, South Africa's batsmen began in similarly punchy mood but were soon overwhelmed by an asking rate of eight an over. Despite a run-a-ball century from AB de Villiers they lost by 153 runs, their second-heaviest one-day defeat.

Tendulkar sailed passed the previous world-record score – the 194 set by Pakistan's Saeed Anwar against India in 1996-97, which was matched in 2009 by Zimbabwe's Charles Coventry against a weak Bangladesh side. However, when MS Dhoni stole the strike for the last over and then hoisted the first ball for six it seemed Tendulkar could end marooned on a bittersweet 199.

But with the crowd baying for their hero, Dhoni – who had dealt almost exclusively in boundaries – wisely sauntered a single, and next ball Tendulkar nurdled a run through gully to reach 200. He and Dhoni, who played a small tornado of an innings, added 101 in only 54 balls.

Tendulkar had begun with boundaries on either side of the wicket off Wayne Parnell and then played an array of cuts, pulls and drives.

Memorably, in the first over of the batting PowerPlay, and the 35th overall, Dale Steyn bowled a full, quick delivery outside off stump; Tendulkar simply walked across his stumps and flicked him through a narrow gap at midwicket. Steyn could only watch the ball speed away and shrug his shoulders.

Tendulkar has scored more runs than anyone in history in both one-day internationals and Test matches. He was briefly dropped by India in 2007 but has since regained his position as the subcontinent's most worshipped cricketer.

Tamim iqbal 3rd odi century

The left-handed opener made the tourists pay dearly for letting him off early in his innings, hitting three sixes and 13 fours in a 120-ball 125 for his third one-day century.

Iqbal, who was on 10 when dropped by Eoin Morgan in the covers off paceman Ryan Sidebottom, paced his innings remarkably well on a slow pitch before becoming the ninth man to be dismissed, bowled by fast bowler Stuart Broad.

He was involved in two useful stands, adding 63 for the opening wicket with Imrul Kayes (15) and as many runs for the seventh with Naeem Islam (25).

England did well to restrict the hosts despite Iqbal's century, with off-spinner Graeme Swann being the most impressive bowler with 3/32 off 10 tight overs.

Iqbal did not curb his strokes after being dropped as he hit a four off Sidebottom and then a six over long-on in the same over.

Sidebottom, giving away 21 runs in his opening three overs, was replaced with Broad who was also punished by the Bangladeshi opener in his first spell.

Iqbal smashed Broad for two successive fours and then a six over mid-wicket in the same over before racing to his half-century off just 32 balls.

England broke the opening-wicket stand when seamer Tim Bresnan deceived Kayes with a slower ball, with Luke Wright holding the leading edge at mid-on.

Broad had Junaid Siddiqui caught by debutant Craig Kieswetter at square-leg for no score before Kevin Pietersen ran Aftab Ahmed out, hitting the stumps at the non-striker's end from mid-on.

When Swann had skipper Shakib Al Hasan (12) caught by wicket-keeper Matt Prior, Bangladesh slipped from 63-0 to 112-4.

Mushfiqur Rahim (22) looked like steadying the innings with Iqbal, but was run out just when his team needed a big partnership to boost their hopes of setting a stiff target in the day-night match.

Messi Scores Late to Keep Barcelona in Top Spot

Lionel Messi’s late goal gave Barcelona a 2-1 victory over Málaga, keeping it at the top of the Spanish league after Real Madrid had earlier won at Tenerife, 5-1, to temporarily lead the standings.

Barcelona dominated possession and created plenty of chances yet could not convert until Pedro Rodriguez beat the goalkeeper Gustavo Munúa in the 70th minute Saturday.

Valmiro Lopez equalized for Málaga in the 81st minute, but Daniel Alves crossed for Messi’s winner in the 84th minute.

Gonzalo Higuaín scored two first-half goals for Madrid. The Argentina forward hit a first-time shot with his left foot from Marcelo’s pass to score in the 29th minute. He added his 16th league goal of the season with his other foot from the edge of the area in the 42nd minute, from Ezequiel Garay’s assist.

Higuaín set Kaká up to score with a through pass in the 48th minute. Cristiano Ronaldo scored Madrid’s fourth from the penalty spot in the 79th minute, and the substitute Raúl González tapped the ball into the net in injury time.

For Tenerife, Ayoze García headed the ball out of Iker Casillas’s hands and into the net in the 47th minute. The referee ignored the goalkeeper’s claim that the goal was illegal.

ITALY Inter Milan scored three first half goals to beat Udinese, 3-2, on Sunday and maintain its four point lead at the top of Serie A ahead of A.C. Milan.

Mario Balotelli, Maicon and Diego Milito scored after Simone Pepe had given Udinese an early lead. Antonio Di Natale converted a penalty shortly after the restart, but José Mourinho’s team held on for the victory.

Meanwhile, Milan comfortably beat Atalanta, 3-1. Alexandre Pato scored twice in the first half, Jaime Valdes responded for Atalanta, but Marco Borriello found the net to secure the victory for Milan.

Roma had to settle for a 2-2 draw at Napoli. Julio Baptista and Mirko Vucinic put Roma 2-0 ahead, but German Denis brought Napoli back into the match in the 75th minute and Marek Hamsik scored an injury time penalty for a share of the points.

On Saturday, the Fiorentina substitute Keirrison equalized in injury time in a 1-1 draw with Lazio.

FRANCE Joris Marveaux scored twice as Montpellier beat Rennes, 3-1, to draw level on points with the French league leader, Bordeaux, but having played two games more.

Bordeaux, the defending champion, tops the standings because it has a better goal difference. Bordeaux was scheduled to play at Le Mans on Sunday, but the game was postponed because of bad weather forecasts.

Marveaux broke the deadlock when left unmarked at the far post, heading in Alberto Costa’s free kick in the 25th minute. The Rennes goalkeeper, Nicolas Douchez, then failed to clear another set piece from Costa and gifted the ball to Marveaux, who coolly slotted home in the 36th minute.

Jimmy Briand of Rennes pulled one back in the 70th minute from close range. Souleymane Camara capped his team’s performance in the 82nd minute with a curled shot following a swift counterattack.

Earlier, Lisandro López scored his 11th goal of the season as Lyon beat Nice, 2-0.
